Re: numerous turning on/off ignition key, Total darkness • Posted in by Swagonmaster
Great. Glad it was an easy fix. Thanks for posting the update and the fix. Seems like few people do that anymore.
Re: Steering stem bearing change. I don't have enough slack in the wires • Posted in by Swagonmaster
Overall I would go with what Rambozo has said about not doing any "creative engineering" on a repair but sometimes it can be done if you are up to reengineering it properly.

After reading the Haynes manual, I placed a jack under the rear wheel and lifted it up. That gave plenty of clearance for the axle to slide out. Success! Now I'll either need to lift the bike more to get the wheel out, or take off the rear fender.

That has come up a few times before. I would vote no on cutting, that's a hack maneuver, Bubba would do. If you search here you can find where you have to go to get some slack. It's not easy but it is doable.
Steering stem bearing change. I don't have enough slack in the wires • Posted in by Quick Cal
I'm following Scott's write up. Right off the bat I'm hung up. Literately. There is not enough slack in the wires going to the turn signal canceler. It's factory cable tied in many places where it goes up behind the instrument cluster.

Had hoped to pull the rear tire today, but stymied by the exhaust. The left side of the exhaust is blocking the axle from sliding out, so I'll be getting under the bike to see how it comes out.

On all the Honda's I've worked on, green is ground. So all of the greens can be connected together.Brown is tail lights (running lights, parking lights, whatever you want to call them). Definitely should not be connected to green.

Not a fan of the Battery Tender JR. I had one go bad and cook the battery. I only use the Battery Tender Plus, the bigger one. I have one that is 20 years old and still works great. It is hooked up to my RV battery right now.

Re: 6th gen GL1800 engine seizes, UBS bolt breaks • Posted in by GoldWingrGreg
My gut is telling me the crux of the issue is harmonics from the crank. While there might of been a heat treat issue or some other martial/production issue concerning the bolt It's not the whole story/truth.
A Honda engine produces a higher bhp (brake horsepower) giving the bike an edge over others. A Honda bike engine will last well over 150,000 miles if the motorcycle is ridden, stored, and serviced following the manufacturer's recommendations.
As long as you continue with proper maintenance the engine would more than likely surpass the life of the transmission. 200,000 miles isn't unheard of. I have one such with over 300,000 miles on it a second with 200,000.
42 MPG - Miles per gallon values are calculated estimates of fuel consumed during laboratory exhaust emissions tests specified by the EPA, not during on road riding.
But above all else, the Honda Gold Wing has earned a reputation for its sterling reliability and bulletproof engine. Consumer Reports has named Honda among the most reliable motorcycle manufacturers, and Cycle World has repeatedly called the Gold Wing the "Best Touring Bike" in its annual Ten Best lists.
Do not ignore the schedule maintenance on your trike, do it and you will be happy with the results. The flat four engine is like a Subaru engine which will last. I read some wings have over 250,000 miles on them and they are still running strong!
