If you woke up yesterday wondering, Why the heck is #CamilaIsOverParty trending all over my feed?, I hate to break it you…but Camila Cabello is currently in a lottttt of hot water. And since this water is basically boiling, please allow me to pour you a piping-hot cup of tea, because thing are about to get ugly.
Last night, Twitter user @MotivateFenty brought out all the receipts and made an extremely detailed thread that exposed Camila’s old Tumblr page back from when she was 15. Camila’s (since-deleted) page, vous-etess-belle, contained multiple racist and xenophobic posts—mind you, around the time Camila made some of these posts, she had already auditioned for The X-Factor.
Now that I’ve piqued your interest, let’s discuss the mess that is Camila’s former Tumblr page, her racist posts and remarks, and her Instagram Story apology released after she was called out online.
First of all, what did Camila post on Tumblr?
Camila used the N-word in text posts more than once and reblogged content from users on the site that visibly depicted Asian and black people being cast into negative stereotypes. If that wasn’t bad enough already, Camila even reblogged posts that made fun of Rihanna’s domestic abuse case with Chris Brown.
Be warned that the posts below are racist and upsetting:
And then there’s this post from Camila’s main Tumblr page:
How do we know this was Camila’s Tumblr page?
As @MotivateFenty pointed out, Camila made it very clear that vous-etess-belle was her personal Tumblr page because she had an old picture of herself as her icon and posted a picture of herself for an anonymous user. Camila also confirmed on her main Tumblr page, waakeme-up, that it was her when a fan previously inquired about the account.
What did Camila do after the Tumblr posts were brought to light?
Unsurprisingly, Camila deleted vous-etess-belle as soon as the Twitter thread started gaining traction. Camila’s other page, waakeme-up, still appears to be functioning.
Has Camila said anything directly?
After people started spreading the old Tumblr screenshots, Camila posted a lengthy apology to her Instagram Story to try to explain her actions. Basically, Camila says she was ignorant back then and unaware of the painful history behind her posts, and she is trying to be a better person at age 22.
Here’s what she wrote, in full:
“When I was younger, I used language that I’m deeply ashamed of and will regret forever. I was uneducated and ignorant and once I became aware of the history and weight and the true meaning behind this horrible and hurtful language, I was deeply embarrassed I ever used it. I apologized then and I apologize again now. I would never intentionally hurt anyone and I regret it from the bottom of my heart. As much as I wish I could, I can’t go back in time and change the things I said in the past. But once you know better, you do better and that’s all I can do.
“I’m 22 now. I’m an adult and I’ve grown and learned and am conscious and aware of the history and the pain it carries in a way I wasn’t before. Those mistakes don’t represent the person I am or a person I’ve ever been. I only stand and have ever stood for love and inclusivity, and my heart has never, even then, had any ounce of hate or divisiveness. The truth is I was embarrassingly ignorant and unaware. I use my platform to speak out about injustice and inequality and I’ll continue doing that. I can’t say enough how deeply sorry and ashamed I feel, and I apologize again from the bottom of my heart.”
