AO Review - Springfield Hellcat Threaded Barrel w/ Self-Indexing Comp (1)

Throughout the years, we have seen many iterations of the now widely-respected and widely-used Springfield Armory Hellcat 9mm. You have the standard model with a 3″ barrel that kicked it all off. You also have the RDP (Rapid Defense Package) sporting Springfield’s Self-Indexing Compensator mated to a threaded barrel. There are also OSP (Optical Sight Pistol) versions and even the near full-frame Hellcat Pro with more capacity than ever in a carry gun. The one thing most Hellcat owners wanted was to get that RDP barrel goodness for their standard model Hellcats; self-indexing compensator and all. Now, Springfield Armory has heard our murmuring cries and offer a Hellcat Threaded Barrel with their Self-Indexing Compensator as a standalone accessory item. We are going to take that product to the range today, get it dirty, feed it some lead, and see how it performs when dropped into my well-fed (and now semi-old) Hellcat. Let’s dive in!

Field Use – Springfield Armory Hellcat Threaded Barrel w/ Self-Indexing Compensator

For shooting theSpringfield Armory Hellcat Threaded Barrel with their Self-Indexing Compensator at the range, I dropped it into my personal 3″ Hellcat which I have had since 2019. My handgun has been well-fed and not cleaned much so it would serve as a good host to test out this new Hellcat Threaded Barrel. When I popped the barrel out of the cardboard tube it comes in – spoiler alert – Tootsie Rolls did not spill out as well (but doesn’t that cardboard tube packaging lookexactly like the Tootsie Roll tubes we got as kids?…).

I threaded the Self-Indexing Compensator off of the Threaded Barrel and then dropped the barrel into my Hellcat; it fit like a glove. To test the threaded barrel’s concentricity (the quality of the barrel’s threads having the same center as theexact center of the barrel), I put my Dead Air Armament Odessa-9 9mm silencer on it. A concentricity test in more simple terms is an alignment test.

The Hellcat Threaded Barrel when completing thesuper-scientific eye-ball test appeared to be properly aligned and concentric, but only shooting it would truly tell. So, we did exactly that. I recruited my neighbor, Alex – military veteran, firearm aficionado – and we shot probably ~200+ rounds of Federal Syntech ammunition through this barrel suppressed and unsuppressed.

An enormous thank you to Federal Premium for providing ammunition for this review. All of the ammo detonated perfectly (never a misfire), was incredibly clean shooting, and the Syntech line specifically provided a great opportunity for our concentricity/alignment test. If the Hellcat Threaded Barrel was not aligned, red shavings from the bullet’s coating would have been present and easy to spot.

With a good volume of this ammunition deposited in the berm, we never witnessed any red shavings from the bullet’s coating I alluded to. So, the Hellcat Threaded Barrel passed our test with flying colors. Additionally, we used my Odessa-9 9mm silencer in its K configuration (compact) and full-size layout as well with no concentricity or alignment issues whatsoever.

Over the course of a couple hours and 200+ rounds of Federal Syntech, we saw a marginal amount of wear on the barrel’s finish, but nothing to be concerned about. This is the exact amount of wear I see on nearly all firearms with this volume of shooting through them in such a short period of time.

We also shot a few magazines with the Self-Indexing Compensator installed and it performed exactly as advertised. Alex and I did not expend a lot of ammo shooting the Self-Indexing Compensator because I have owned a Hellcat RDP since they came out and am intimately familiar with how those should function and work as well. This standalone product works identically to the factory-configured Hellcat RDP.

Final Thoughts – Springfield Armory Hellcat Threaded Barrel w/ Self-Indexing Compensator

So, what are my final thoughts on theSpringfield Armory Hellcat Threaded Barrel with their Self-Indexing Compensator?… Overall, it functioned and performed flawlessly. It was identical to shooting a factory-configured Hellcat RDP which is all we could hope for. At an MSRP of $199.99, you get a lot of value because you aren’t gettingjust a threaded barrel for your Hellcat, but also a perfectly-timed compensator, too. If anyone is in the market for a threaded barrel for their Hellcat handgun, we highly recommend this add-on accessory.

In closing, I want to say thank you to Springfield Armory for allowing AllOutdoor and myself the opportunity to try out their Springfield Armory Hellcat Threaded Barrel with a Self-Indexing Compensator. That is greatly appreciated. Also, we would like to know what all of you guys and gals think? FAQs

What does a self-indexing compensator do? ›

REDUCES MUZZLE RISE

The compensator vents gasses upward, putting downward pressure on the muzzle and greatly reducing muzzle rise for better control and faster follow up shots.

Does the Hellcat compensator make a difference? ›

The RDP's comp effectively keeps the front end of the gun more level than without as the slide cycles. The threaded barrel will also accept a suppressor, or it can be capped with an included thread protector when no muzzle device is desired. Another Hellcat enhancement was launched with the RDP: A new Gen 2 trigger.

Can I put a compensator on my Hellcat? ›

Tame muzzle rise with the Springfield Armory® Self Indexing Compensator for Hellcat® and Hellcat® Pro threaded barrels. Machined from 8082 aircraft-grade aluminum, this compensator vents gasses upward putting downward pressure on the muzzle greatly reducing muzzle rise for better control and faster follow up shots.

What is the best aftermarket barrel for the Hellcat Pro? ›

True Precision Inc has the best aftermarket barrel for the Hellcat Pro, and they offer an array of coating options. I have a threaded stainless steel Hellcat Pro barrel from True Precision. The barrel from True Precision was very simple to drop into the slide, it was a perfect fit and did not require any adjustments.

What are the disadvantages of a compensator? ›

Disadvantages of Lead Compensator

Reduced stability at lower frequencies due to phase lead. Prone to noise amplification as it boosts high-frequency response. Limited phase lead of 60° from a single-stage network. Increased design complexity for higher phase lead values.

Does a compensator make a pistol louder? ›

Compensators can add a bit of noise. Here at Silencer Shop, we're all about making shooting easier on the ears. But by redirecting gases more toward the shooter, compensators can also raise the volume for you and your friends at the range.

Do compensators make guns less reliable? ›

They can also affect your pistol's reliability. The majority of modern pistols are recoil operated and since recoil is reduced when using a compensator, the overall reliability of your pistol can take a hit. There isn't much to worry about when you're shooting defensive ammunition, as they tend to have more recoil.

Does compensator affect accuracy? ›

Apparently, this contraption allows for wicked-fast target re-acquisition because it helps control recoil. Controlled Recoil on a firearm makes you more accurate and helps for faster target acquisition because, in theory, your muzzle doesn't move as far off target.

What is better silencer or compensator? ›

If stealth and reduced noise are the primary concerns, then a silencer would be the preferred choice. However, if improved control and faster target acquisition are the priorities, then a compensator would likely be the better option.

What kind of barrel do you need for a compensator? ›

Compensators can be fixed to the firearm, known as integrated compensators, or standard compensators can be installed onto a threaded barrel.

How much difference does a compensator make on a pistol? ›

Pros. 25-45% less recoil for faster accurate shots. And unlike ported barrels, compensators don't reduce the power of your shots. Same recoil with more powerful ammo.

Do Springfield Hellcats jam? ›

Problem #2 - Springfield Hellcat Feeding Issue

This can result in jams or delays in subsequent shots, posing significant reliability concerns for those depending on the Hellcat for self-defense or regular shooting exercises.

Does the Springfield Hellcat have a match grade barrel? ›

The True Precision Springfield Armory Hellcat Barrel is a new improved easy drop-in match-grade 416R stainless steel upgrade. These 100% Made in USA barrels have desirable features like a machine-polished feed ramp, a 60-degree crown which helps improve reliability and accuracy.

Is Springfield Hellcat accurate? ›

Groups generally averaged between 2 inches and 3 inches with 10 brands of ammo.

What is the purpose of a compensator? ›

WHAT DOES A COMPENSATOR DO? Most compensators divert gasses and muzzle blast in a downward fashion to keep the firearm from rising during the firing sequence. One of the earliest compensator designs was the Cutts Compensator found on the Thompson submachine gun.

Do pistol compensators reduce reliability? ›

They can also affect your pistol's reliability. The majority of modern pistols are recoil operated and since recoil is reduced when using a compensator, the overall reliability of your pistol can take a hit. There isn't much to worry about when you're shooting defensive ammunition, as they tend to have more recoil.

Should I put a compensator on my pistol? ›

There are both physical and practical reasons to have a compensator. Shooters who fire their EDC gun regularly, especially for high-round count practice, will experience less physical fatigue as they have an easier job with a compensated barrel.

Do pistol compensators reduce velocity? ›

A compensator diverts exploding propellant's energy upward instead of directly behind the bullet. It invests a portion of the cartridge's limited amount of energy into reducing muzzle flip instead of merely propelling the bullet, which produces significantly lower velocity and striking energy as a result.
